So you have sat down and looked at your budget, calculated actual costs of an employee, and are now ready to hire a new employee. The hiring process of a business should be taken seriously as it can be time consuming and costly if not done properly. You want to be very thorough in the hiring process so that you get the right person added to your team. A clear plan prior to hiring the new employee can help in the process. So what are some helpful tips to consider when hiring a new employee?
CLEAR JOB DESCRIPTION – You will want to make sure that you clearly define what spot is going to be filled in your business. Try to avoid having a generic “admin”, “sales”, or “management” label. Sit down and actually write a job description of the new employee and what their duties and tasks will be. Make sure to detail whom they will report to or will be in charge of. I have seen where companies will hire new employees and not give them a clear job description, duties, or whom they will report to. This creates problems later down the road when that employee starts to make assumptions because of not being given clear details of their job.
CLEAR PLANS FOR FUTURE – Where is it that you want this employee to add value to your company now and going forward? In the job description planning you will want to consider how this position you are filling is going to benefit your company now and in the future. Focus not only in filling the position now, but how this position and employee are going to get you to your future business plans and goals.
FIND THE RIGHT PERSON – So how do you find the right person? You will first want to start out by doing a simple personality profile analysis of each applicant. Here is a simple free personality profile DISC Profile. I recently had a client that was telling me about his recent hiring process. Upon receiving the applications via email and fax, he then instructed the applicants to go and do the simple personality profile analysis. He instructed that once they have completed that to email him the results. This was smart on his part because he weeded down more than half of his applications due to people either not filling out the profile or those profiles that did not match the position he was looking to fill. Your main goal is to match the right applicant to the position you are trying to fill.
Next, you will want to check the references of all the applicants that meet your personality profile for the job you are looking to fill. Contact these references by phone and ask them about the applicant. This will help you narrow down the list of applicants you will potentially interview even further.
Finally, you are ready to bring in applicants for an interview. Prior to this step the applicant has done most of the work for you and the weeding out process has made significant progress. In the interview process you will want to make sure you ask very detailed questions to find out about your applicants. Make sure to be careful to stay away from questions that could potentially cause a legal nightmare. Once you have had your interviews you should be ready to make the decision on the right person.
The hiring process is very important for your business. It doesn’t need to be something that is looked at lightly as this has an impact on the future plans and goals of your business.
